These were both on Post Secret this week. I find both really sad – especially the first one. UW is becoming the UC Berkeley of the Pacific Northwest, with thousands of straight-A, highly involved, very capable applicants being rejected this year.
Most of my students who applied got in, but I've heard of others who haven't--and have great grades and other qualifications. Sometimes I wonder what they're looking for if it's not excellent grades and lots of activities. Out of state tuition perhaps?
Out of state tuition is definitely part of it. The Seattle PI had an article that said they reduced in-state admissions to get more out of state students, who subsidize in-state students by paying 3x the tuition.
