We’ll be leaving the Uhland Hotel (see photo) in Munchen today for my favorite place on earth, the town of Ruhpolding, near my mother’s hometown of Traunstein… which is not far from Salzburg (which we’ll visit, of course). I have a feeling that our Internet options there will be even more limited than our options here, so here are a few photos of Munchen to “tide you over” until I can post more – which will likely be when we come out of the Alps and onto the Romatische Strasse, next Saturday.
A really prevalent, but admittedly completely ridiculous, thought that’s been going through my head since we arrived is that I somehow betrayed my heritage by being American. I know – I had no say in the whole thing. But even as a foreigner (and I do feel like one!), there’s something about Germany – and especially Bavaria – that feels very right, way down deep. (How can I feel both very much like a foreigner and very much at home? I have no idea!) I’ve found myself wondering where I’d be if my parents hadn’t immigrated in 1953. I’d be… here.
I’d be… well, not the me I am.
I’ll post again when I can. Maybe tonight, maybe next week! If only I knew!

Gotta love the Hofbrauhaus! I haven't had the nerve yet to make it to Munich for Oktoberfest, but it must be amazing.
ReplyDeleteVery nice pictures, your new camera is proving itself!
I know that feeling of "what if". Although I have lived in the States for 46 years now, I still feel German (although considering myself American) and wonder a lot of times what would have happened if I'd stayed in Germany.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are wonderful!
hat is one seriously big beer...
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Germany! Glad to hear you are enjoying your return. Hope the weather is holding up ok - what a nasty summer it was. I will have to check out Traunstein, etc.. I LOVE the Bavarian countryside and towns around Munich and Salzburg.
ReplyDeleteI too know that what if feeling, I experience it every time I go back to Germany. Too bad I had to loose my citizenship when I became Canadian. I'm heading there tonight and I can hardly wait for that flight. Internet can't be any worse than Greece can it?...ciao
ReplyDeleteWonderful, wonderful photos and I am SO missing Germany! I'm hoping we'll be there visiting my exchange daughter and her family in February.
